Greene County is located in southeastern New York. It has the Hudson River on its eastern border and the Catskill Park takes up much of the south central region.Greene County has a total area of approximately 658 square miles of which 98% is land and 2% water. As of the census of 2000, there were 48,195 people, 18,256 households, and 12,067 families residing in Greene County, New York. Out of the state's 58 counties, it ranks as the 48th most populous. Its name is in honor of the American Revolutionary War general, Nathanael Greene.
